IT operations means the ongoing responsibility for a system after it's been built: monitoring, updates, backups, and incident response – as opposed to a one-time deployment or plain hosting.

What does operations actually cover?

Why does this matter?

"It runs in the cloud" or "the server is hosted with a provider" doesn't answer who's responsible for the tasks above. A running server is no guarantee of an operated service – deployment and operations are two different things. That gap usually stays invisible until an outage, a failed restore, or a security incident makes it visible.
